Google Street View Helps Solve a Crime

January 8th, 2009

Those who have been criticizing the invasion of privacy posed by Google Street View may find some reprieve from their complaints and perhaps appreciate one positive ways by ways the service can actually help the society. More particularly the police authority in solving crime, as in the case of a kidnapped girl somewhere in South-central Virginia. Police authorities were able to track down the victim and her perpetrators through the combination of GPS, cellphone, Google search engine and of course Google Street View. (more…)

SEO & the Value of User-Generated Dictionaries

January 8th, 2009

I have already blogged on using dictionaries for keyword research. Most of the online resources mentioned in that post are based on traditional English dictionaries that offer accurate definitions, grammatically correct phrases and usage patterns.

The interactive nature of the Internet has made room for a new linguistic tool: user-generated dictionaries:

Taking advantage of the dynamic nature of the Internet [user-generated dictionaries have] added to lexicography an element of dynamism: definitions are pluralistic and open to reinterpretation by every user. Moving away from the traditional role of reference works as sources of static information and into a participatory activity, it might be said that user-generated dictionaries are reinventing the very nature of dictionaries themselves.

That said, user-generated dictionaries can be especially useful for topic and keyword research due to their dynamic nature: learn how real people are using your key terms and how they explain those terms and word combination.

Building Links on Your Offline Time

January 8th, 2009

Link building doesn’t just happen online…it can quite easily happen when you’re nowhere near a computer, when you’re simply talking to someone, wearing a t-shirt with your site’s name on it, sneaking in a mention of a URL during a quick chat or a major speech, etc. In short, there’s much more to building links than can be undertaken using a keyboard and a persuasive email.

Dropping Your URL in Conversation

Case in point: the lovely and talented Lisa Ditlefsen, co-founder of my blog, SEO Chicks, and amazingly talented offline marketer in her own right. (more…)

Yahoo Now Can Change Advertiser Search Marketing Campaigns

January 8th, 2009

Yahoo Search Marketing has rolled out a new TOS which gives it the right to change the search marketing campaigns of its advertisers via changing their ads and adding keywords.

Sponsored Search 3. OPTIMIZATION. In the U.S. only, for those advertisers not bound by an Insertion Order, we may help you optimize your account(s). Accordingly, you expressly agree that we may also: (i) create ads, (ii) add and/or remove keywords, and/or (iii) optimize your account(s). We will notify you via email of such changes made to your account(s), and can also include a spreadsheet of such changes upon your written request.

Is Yahoo so hard up that the company now has to add keywords to the campaigns of their existing advertisers without the blessing of those advertisers? Is this an attempt to boost capital before a buyout by Microsoft? Something seems very wrong here.

Find Out If Your Online Identity Has Been Stolen

January 8th, 2009

The diversity of social media communities has brought one huge Internet marketing problem: online identity theft. If you are lucky enough to own a fairly popular unique brand name and smart enough to use it for social networking, you might have already fallen prey to this abuse (though you might be unaware of that).

Someone has most probably used your original well-branded name to register an account at a number of less known user-generated sites and talk to people online on your behalf.

The problem is neither new nor badly covered throughout Internet marketing blogs. We’ve all seen multiple case studies of companies dealing with this kind of abuse - let’s remember SEOmoz fighting for its Twitter account as an example. (more…)

Search for SEO eBooks and PDF Tutorials

January 8th, 2009

1. Scribd (already mentioned at SEJ) is a huge user-generated database of eBooks and community of writers. Due to the huge volume of eBooks it contains and also being user-generated (and thus used for self-promotion most of the time) in nature, it is not so easy to find something valuable there. You can try to browse its groups. There are several really cool groups there found for [SEO] search each containing really good books.

Scribd

2. Google offers a nifty advanced operator allowing to search for any file types: {filetype:} or {ext:} - that’s my preferred way to search for eBooks and pdf reports (as well as search for anything actually). First, I am just used to Google search and secondly, Google search works the best for me: it returns most relevant results, can be customized and restricted with other advanced operators.

The only disadvantage of it is that it returns only one or two results from one domain (and thus you risk missing plenty of useful and important documents stored at popular eBook directories like Scribd).

3. PDFdatabase claims to contain more than 7 million pdf and doc files. The search is quite fast and focused. The search results are pretty self-explanatory: you will see the document name, size, the full URL, the related search tags and the download link:

Verizon Picks Microsoft Over Google for Mobile Search

January 8th, 2009

In a move which may influence the search association mobile phone users have with their search engine of choice, Verizon has chosen Microsoft Search over Google as its default search engine of choice.

Verizon is expected to be the #1 mobile carrier in the US after its planned acquisition of Alltell this week and the move could be a set back for Google mobile, while also balancing out the mobile search field a bit.

Although there is an instant association between the actions of searching and Googling, having Microsoft Search as the Mobile Search default for Verizon will have some influence on its users who may have not yet developed a sense of Google loyalty or do not have the time or know-how to download various applications for cell phone customization.

The partnership may also lead to default audio search provided by Microsoft, which along with web search will assist Microsoft in winning mobile user loyalty.

Apple Removes Anticopying Measures on iTunes Songs

January 8th, 2009

At the recently concluded Macworld conference, among the not so many highlights of the event was Apple’s announcement that it would start selling songs at its iTunes store withouth the usual Digital Rights Managements software. Apple reported that it has already reached an agreement with three major music labels, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group to allow them to sell their music tracks on iTunes minus the said anticopying measures. This is in addition to songs released through another major music company, EMI which has already allowed Apple to do so before. (more…)

5 Link Building Tactics You Probably Don’t Use But Should

January 8th, 2009

The end of the year saw a couple of remarkable ultimate link building lists; so I see no reason to add my own. Instead I decided to describe a few highly effective, not yet overused and quite original link building techniques you might have never used before.

1. Start anti-smth online campaign and offer badges. The hotter the topic, the better. Example: do you remember last year’s buzz around RipOFFReport.com marketing model? How smart that was of Distilled to start "get rid of ripoffreport from the SERPS" campaign with wonderful badges.
