Google Adds Privacy to StreetView, Blurs Faces

Google has begun rolling out new technology that will bring a layer of privacy to their controversial Street Views product that was previously unavailable. The technology automatically blurs out any human face appearing in the service’s street-level photos, which were taken by camera-mounted vehicles.

The face blurring technology will be applied to all existing Street View images, and will be incorporated into all future releases of the mapping feature. The integration of this new feature is intended to satisfy privacy concerns related to the service, which may have unintentionally photographed someone who does not want to be identified.

Google has previewed the face blurring on Street View images on its Manhattan maps, and will so roll it out to encompass all Street View maps. The announcement was made earlier this week on the Google LatLong blog.
